I was asked just yesterday about painting the ceiling in a house a client of mine is renovating. Should I paint the ceiling and should I paint it white? There are lots of choices. I absolutely love the wood grain ceilings in sun porches, I've seen the ceiling in a townhouse done with a bright fuscia with white sponge painted on it but that was hidious and it really made the room feel claustrophic. You do have to be careful but there are so many options as to what color and finish you can put on the ceiling. Check out some decorator magazines and model homes and see what others are doing!!
Move over decorator white - ceilings are definitely about to come alive!
It's been standard operating procedure to paint your walls a color while keeping your ceilings white - flat decorator white has traditionally been the color of choice. We've been told that this makes a room feel lighter and brighter. While there is no doubt that a white ceiling will brighten a room, certain colors will actually make a room feel more expansive. The key to using a bold or dark color on the ceiling without the space becoming cave-like, is to keep the adjacent walls white or light and, to make sure that your room has adequate lighting.
Ceilings have been crying out for color for a while now and, as I recently learned when I went to the Kips Bay Showroom in New York, designers are choosing a semigloss finish for the ceiling as well. I believe that we need to consider the ceiling the fifth wall of a room. Often neglected, a bold color on the ceiling can give your room that wow factor. And, because of the introduction of LED lighting, using a glossy finish no longer creates unwanted shadows.
Painted ceilings look great with any design style. From traditional to mid-century modern, I've been painting this neglected fifth wall for a while now and I think that my clients are enjoying the results!
