Ramblings of a Baltimore area Realtor: Can You Buy a House while on an H1B Visa?

Can You Buy a House while on an H1B Visa?

Can You Buy a House while on an H1B Visa?

Or should you buy a house while on an H1B Visa?

Well, the answer is - It depends!!

You can buy a house in the United States while you are here on an H1B Visa.  There are a number of loan programs that allow you to purchase a house with as little as 3% down payment and a FICO credit score of 620 or higher.  As long as you have a social security number or an ITIN number and have established credit you may be able to qualify for a mortgage.

Some of the benefits of buying an home rather than renting are:

  • Stability

  • More choices as to where you can live if you purchase a home
  • If you have children they will be happier to have their own space and be able to decorate it the way they like

  • Your spouse will be happier because they can decorate it the way they want too

  • It is often cheaper to buy a home than it is to rent a home

  • There may be some tax benefits too

Currently, the Maryland area property values are on the rise and rents are too.  You will likely pay less per month to own a home than to rent a home and with down payments as low as 3% what do you have to lose?

Let me guide you through the process.
